American Foods Group (AFG) has announced plans to close its Skylark Meats processing facility in Omaha, Nebraska, with operations expected to end by Aug. 25. The closure will affect approximately 218 employees, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filed with the state.
The Skylark Meats facility specializes in processing beef liver and variety meats. Company officials said the decision follows a review of operations and reflects the current challenges facing the beef processing industry, including historically tight cattle supplies. Production from the Omaha facility is expected to be absorbed by other American Foods Group operations.
The announcement comes as beef processors across the country continue to navigate reduced cattle numbers and higher procurement costs. U.S. cattle inventories remain at their lowest levels in decades, creating ongoing pressure on processing margins and leading some companies to adjust plant capacity.
American Foods Group, a privately held beef processor with operations across the United States, said it will provide support and transition resources to affected employees during the closure process.
